Peace Corps will celebrate the 2008 Franklin H. Williams Awards at Peace Corps headquarters in Washington, D.C.


This award is given in memory of Mr. Franklin H. Williams, a foreign and domestic public servant until his death in 1990. Mr. Williams’ exceptional career included time as the Peace Corps Regional Director for Africa and the U.S. Ambassador to Ghana. Mr. Williams also played an important role in helping Sargent Shriver, the first Peace Corps Director, promote the agency and its programs to the world. In naming this award for Mr. Williams, the Peace Corps pays tribute to his remarkable legacy and recognizes 11 Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) of Color, who carry on his spirit of service and have demonstrated a commitment to the Peace Corps’ third goal

Planning Grant Competition Opens for the Africa-U.S. Higher Education Initiative

Higher Education for Development (HED) has launched an open competition for 20 capacity-building partnership awards of $50,000 each to be funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Applications must be received by Feb. 2, 2009. The award competition is open to all types of U.S. higher education institutions to collaborate with African institutions.

International Science and Education Competitive Grants Program (ISE)

The United States Department of Agriculture CSREES’s program supports research, extension, and teaching activities that will enhance the capabilities of American colleges and universities to conduct international collaborative research, extension and teaching. ISE projects are expected to enhance the international content of curricula; ensure that faculty work beyond the U.S. and bring lessons learned back home; promote international research partnerships; enhance the use and application of foreign technologies in the U.S.; and strengthen the role that colleges and universities play in maintaining U.S. competitiveness.

The White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (WHI-HBCUs) will host an all Agency Meeting on Thursday, January 22, 2009, at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) East Building, Room 1153 (Federal Triangle Metro Stop), Washington, DC.  The meeting for designated agency representatives and/or liaisons will convene at 9:30 a.m. and adjourn at 12:30 p.m.

Environmental consciousness is at an all-time high and colleges and universities are experiencing increased pressures from stakeholders to lower carbon outputs, green campus operations, and graduate students equipped to lead sustainability initiatives in all sectors.  A partnership of the United States Environmental Protection Agency, National Association of College and University Business Officers, University of Maryland and several other higher education associations is supporting a comprehensive symposium on sustainability, including operational solutions, smart growth policies, and strategies for achieving climate neutrality.
